The
primary task of a teacher is to explain and to make sure that all the
pupils understand what is said. The next stage is to test how much each
pupil has been able to retain. This is done first by oral and/or blackboard
work. Answers to probable questions are also discussed, and, when
necessary, some model answers are provided as a guideline. Then a classwork is set and corrected in detail. The corrected
classwork is sent to parents for scrutiny and
signature.

Very
little homework is set, and it mostly consists of handwriting, correction
of errors, revision of work done in class, and reading. In the case of slow
learners, specific tasks may be set by the teachers concerned. Guardians
are requested not to help pupils with these tasks. All that a guardian
needs to do is to supervise that the pupil does the work that he/she has
been set.

Contrary
to popular belief, weekly or monthly tests mean a constant and never-ending
strain on pupils. This system not only eats into the number of teaching
periods, it also denies the pupils an opportunity to correct their errors
and to clear any doubts they might have. It also makes the task of
cross-checking, which is essential in any form or system of evaluation,
difficult.

To
reduce the pressure on pupils, only two examinations are held in an
academic year, a Half-Yearly Examination and an Annual Examination. While
promotion depends mainly on the performance in the Annual Examination, the
general proficiency shown throughout the year, and
the performance in the Half-Yearly Examination is also taken into account.

All
decisions regarding promotion and other related matters are taken by the
Academic Council in consultation with the Class Teachers, Subject Teachers
and Examiners concerned. Such decisions, being jointly taken, cannot be
revised or modified by any individual and are final.

There
are no examinations for pupils of Nursery to Class II. Pupils of these
classes are assessed on the work done in class throughout the year.
